MGMT, the dance-punk psychedelic pop duo whom I love, is playing a benefit concert tonight at the Prospect Park Bandshell. MGMT is: Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, two "psychic pilgrims whose paths first intersected in the green pastures of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, circa 2002". The indie duo is now based in Brooklyn. The pair claims their catchy indie-rock psychedelic dance tunes are inspired primarily by the Incredible String Band, Hall & Oates, Suicide, and Spacemen 3. I got hooked on their synthpop style living in LA where KROQ showed them lots of love by playing their 3 big hits "Electric Feel", "Kids", and "Time to Pretend" just often enough to turn you into a fan. They have become so popular since the launch of their album Oracular Spectacular in 2007 that even Paul McCartney wants to work with them. Just last month McCartney told website Zoegriffin.co.uk, "I like MGMT," McCartney said. "I'd like to work on some more dancey stuff with [them]. But it has to happen organically. I can't call them. If they called me, I'd say, 'How did you get my number?' But I'd do it."
Tickets are $30 and the proceeds will be used to fund all of the other free shows in the Celebrate Brooklyn line-up. Unfortunately if you are like me and you don't have a ticket yet, the show is sold out. You may be able to pick one up through Craigslist, or if you are a die hard fan, you can just pack a blanket, some eats, brown bag a 40 and take your crew to the park anyway. Just find an area near the bandshell where you can still hear the music and set up shop. Then just pretend that you are inside and have your own MGMT dance party. I mean if you don't have any plans tomorrow night, why the heck not?
But if crashing ain't your thang, MGMT will be back in the states next month after they hit up Australia and New Zealand. They will play in Jersey August 2nd at Liberty State Park for All Points West, and if you have it in you to ZipCar or BoltBus your way up to Beantown, they have 2 shows at Fenway Park on August 5th and 6th. More info on the band and complete tour dates can be found on their website by clicking HERE or on their Myspace page HERE.
And to MGMT: if you or anyone who works with you reads this blog, give Paul a call. He's expecting you.
