Continuing this weekend in downtown Brooklyn, Afro-Punk, BAMcinematek and Mountain Dew bring you the 5th annual Afro-Punk festival!
Today from 11am-10pm there will be LIVE music all day and the Afro-Punk Skate Park opens (GGMC Car Park corner of Lafayette and Flatbush Ave). There will be a FREE Nike SB Skate Clinic every day of the festival from 11 to 4pm plus demos from some of the world's sickest skaters. There will also be Afro-Punk Films screening at BAMcinematek all day and at 8pm tonight Whole Wheat Bread, will be rocking out the stage. Whole Wheat Bread hails from Duval County, Florida and describe their music as "dirty south punk rap crunk rock". They put on a hell of a show, so if you are in the area and are as frustrated as we are with the lack of fireworks in Brooklyn/East River (damn you Macy's switching things up on us and moving your 4th of July fireworks show to the Hudson! Do we really need to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the river by Henry Hudson?!? What about us? Sigh. . .) we highly recommend you checking out the show! They rock!
The festival continues tomorrow with a tribute to Spike Lee where a number of his films will be screened including "Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads" and "Making Do the Right Thing", a behind the scenes documentary about the film that made Spike Lee's name as a director which will be followed by a panel discussion. On Monday the fun continues with more music and URBANX Battle for the Streets Best Trick Contest hosted by Steve Rodriguez/5Boro.
And if you can't make it this weekend, there will be more film screenings on July 7th and 8th and a block party next Sunday July 12th to close out this year's festival. It will be held on Clinton Ave. btwn. Myrtle and Willoughby from 1 to 8pm and is sure to be a blast and totally free. The event will feature live music, DJs, and DIY fashion, food, and craft vendors. There will be live performances by John Forte, Joya Bravo, Maiysha, Shinobi Ninja, and one of our absolute favorite DJs, Rich Medina. Mark your calendars! This is not your average street fair!
